Hmmm,  what went from  "service engine soon" to a computer error code, to a 
slipping tranny that wont pass an emission test.  

The "service engine light" NORMALLY comes on around 60 or 70K.  I'd get a 
second opinion before I plunked down 3 grand.  Call the Car Guys!!!
