You could say he talked about the environment, the wilderness.  But this 
stuff was all second hand: recounting things he had read...historical.  
All the first person narrative is mostly about how stupid hikers are, 
and how miserable hiking is.  Like Mary Ellen in chapters 4,5, who is 
always "blowing out her ear holes".
