[at-l] Update on BMT expansion....

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to update you on the expansion of the Benton MacKaye Trail that will be hooking up with the AT at Springer on the southern end and near Deals Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the northern end.  Much of the new sections are now open for hikes.  You can check out more information on the BMT at http://www.bmta.org/  To get more information on the sections that are open, just click on the Trail Section Descriptions link on the left-hand side.

Betty Petty sent out some great pics that I hope to have posted at backcountry sometime today of Saturday's work trip.

Ken Jones...a really awesome guy that has spearheaded this effort...sent out the following report after Saturday's work trip.

Hello All:

It's Done, Over, and Complete! Yesterday, on the monthly work trip, we finished all new trail construction for the BMT. The only remaining work is to paint our white diamond blazes on another 35 miles of existing trails. Next week we will be working our usual M-W-F schedule. We will be meeting at the Etowah Hardees for breakfast, leaving there at 8 am. We will be blazing the John Muir Trail if the weather cooperates. I will be out of town on Wednesday and Friday, so Clayton will be leading these trips.

Thank you all for your support of the construction effort over the last 14 months. It has been a team effort, and the BMTA team has succeeded in fine style, with a trail that we can all be proud of for decades to come.
