I went out for a 9 mile power walk last night. Normally I wear braces on my
ankles but the braces were pretty thrashed by the end of my thruhike and I'm
waiting for some replacement parts, so I went out without 'em. Sure enough,
two miles into my walk, my right ankle went wooky and I went crashing down.
My Patagonia leggings, which I wore every day on the second half of my
thruhike and love, survived intact. I know from previous falls that if you
think you might be bleeding you should check, so I checked and discovered a
large, nasty abrasion on my left knee which was bleeding a lot.
I was on a major road getting ready to head towards a bike path, so I sat
down on a low wall near the bike path and poured some water over the knee to
clean it. I was about to patch it clumsily with my bandana when a passing
cyclist stopped to see if I was okay. It turns out she was a surgery
technician at a nearby veterinary hospital heading home from work. She
said, "Oh, I can fix that!" and biked back to the hospital. She came back
with all kinds of first aid and really patched up my knee quite well. So
well, in fact, I was able to complete my walk. I took her flowers and a
thank you note today. Doncha love kindness!
