A couple of years ago I found an excellent report of (I believe) the 1938
hurricane.  It was very detailed, and had some amazing statistics about how
far inland the salt water was driven.  (I have forgotten the stats,
unfortunately.)  As I recall, most weather forecasters thought the storm
would turn NE and avoid North American landfall, except for one young
forecaster.  Then the storm's speed was far to quick to warn anyone in New
England.  I searched for that account around the time of Charley, but
couldn't find it.  I've only been able to find small blurbs like the above
link provides.
