Do we want all these people to be hikers?  Aren't our trails just about over-used anyway?  Aren't some of the Western trails, like the John Muir Trail, on a permit basis to keep too many people from using them at once?  If everyone else hiked, would we want to?  I see hiking as a way to avoid many of the crowds in our everyday lives.  anklebear
