Building the North Country Trail

Carl Levin, senior U.S. senator from Michigan June 07, 2004

Most people are familiar with the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail, which spans the East Coast from Maine to Georgia and has a long, storied history dating back to the 1920s.

What few people know is that we are in the process of creating a trail even longer than the Appalachian Trail that will traverse the northern United States, and Michigan is home to a larger percentage of the trail than any other state.
The North Country Trail, when completed, will span more than 4,000 miles across seven states, making it the longest off-road hiking trail in the country. Approximately 1,750 miles of the trail have been certified, including about 620 miles in Michigan, and each state which houses portions of the trail - New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota - has organizations of volunteers that are busily working to secure land, clear pathways, and provide maintenance and upkeep for the trail. This volunteer network is a crucial tool in the quest to complete the trail.

There is a bill pending in Congress, which I cosponsored, that would resolve this issue by giving the National Park Service the authority to acquire land, including easements, from willing sellers so that the park service can continue the process of completing trails designated as "national scenic and historic trails," including the North Country Trail.
