That is in fact the case.  You can go to
http://www.instantmessenger.com/
 and download the newest version (v. 5.5 I think) and subscribe to the
messenger service only so you can still IM with your pals.  You may need
to re-create your buddy list since it's not the same as the one
integrated into your AOL browser.
