[at-l] why?

Although coming from the Dartmouth "ultra" list, this struck me
as having trememdous and universal application. Hope you're
having a tremendous day. 'Toe

Subject: Re: WHY ULTRAS???

A full moon that was bright enough to allow us to run without
lights .
The stars viewed from a trail at night high in the mountains .
A herd of elk that let us pass within 50 feet -- barely giving
us a glance (except one, whose head slowly turned as we passed).
The look on the ranger's face when we answered the question,
"Where did you folks run from?"
Finding the car again.
The quiet companionship of my wife those many long miles.
ravens and their many voices
deer that don't run when you start talking to them (they just
keep those big radar dish ears turning)
beaver ponds we had to cross because they don't show on maps and
we couldn't turn back
dawn through tall, frosty grass on a hillside
strangers met, friends departed
baby porcupines, unafraid of you in their world
things we heard, but escaped from in the dark
mountain bikers I have passed on long uphills
greetings exchanged, smiles shared, many miles in and miles to
go
fog so thick your familiar course becomes a stranger
saying hi to all on the back of an out and back
watching big horn sheep show me the "proper" way to ascend the
hill

Run gently out there
