Coalition asks for tower to be denied

Just weeks before a communications tower used by emergency personnel is expected to become unusable, a coalition of preservation and recreation groups has asked the federal government to deny Maryland permission to build a replacement tower at the crest of South Mountain, known as Lamb's Knoll.

The South Mountain Coalition, led by groups such as Harpers Ferry Conservancy and the Appalachian Trail Conference, has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission not to accept the state's word that the tower will not affect the environment.

The coalition contends the 180-foot-tall tower, topped by a 15-foot antenna, would mar the landscape of an area protected by state legislation designating it the South Mountain State Battlefield.
