There's only two possible uses for the card while on the trail. One is to
get member discounts on any purchases at the ATC headquarters in Harpers
Ferry. I imagine that if they really want to they can verify your
membership without the card. The second is that there are two fees at the
AYH hostels, one for members and one for non-members. The one at Pine Grove
Furnace recognized ATC membership the same as AYH membership, and would
take your word for it (none of us that were members were carrying our
cards).
So, no, there isn't really a reason to bounce the card along...
