All of which tells us absolutely nothing that is in anyway related to the
Appalachian Trail, or any trails, anywhere, or even about the environment. Well,
perhaps it does remind us again that there are environmental nuts as well as
religious nuts, right wing nuts, gun nuts, and sundry other nuts in this world.

   In 35 years as a reporter covering the "environment," I almost never wrote
   the word "environmentalist" because it had no meaning in the real world. Most
   "environmental" battles in my experience were conducted by people protecting
   their neighborhoods.

    That in no way means to suggest that these were not important issues; only
    that the label "environmentalist" was about on a par with calling a spouse
    with a thing about a clean house an environmentalist.
