Jim Bullard notes the disappearance of the pay phone. I've had the 
experience (Mtn Mama's) of pay phones that refuse to accept 800 numbers, 
only allowing long distance calls paid in cash for a brief call. Hence, 
telephone cards were useless for those few phones I met. I never saw that 
problem in NJ and NY.

However, I bet that most hostels, motels and such will have phones for use 
at more convenient rates. I know that it is easier to find a public phone 
in Hot Springs than it is to find a cell signal. Great town!
