Chainsaw,

Reference your post, dated 1-29-04, detailing the difficulty of opening new
Mylar space blankets.

You suggest, opening the blanket then "... crumple / wrinkle it, and re-pack
it. It is not as small as it was, but I have some hope of being able to use
it with the -umbels, of hypothermia."

Another option is to carefully open the space blanket package, gently open
only the innermost part of the space blanket, fold a short piece of duct
tape over each of the two opposing edges, re-fold the space blanket, return
it to its package, then reseal the package.

You will be able to open the space blanket, prying at the duct tape, yet you
can return the space blanket to its prior size - - well pretty closely,
there is the thickness of that duct tape. There's also the additional
weight of the duct tape. I've used the safety orange and safety yellow duct
type tape available at Walmart.

Steve
