[at-l] AT-L 2004 Thru-HIkers

The letters stand for Leave With Out Pay. That was my pay status with the Postal Service when I left for a ten week AT hike back in 2002. I no longer work for the Postal Service but so many of my hiking friends and family know me as Lwop that I'm going keep that name. I guess that now it could mean Living With Out Pay. One waitress along the AT said to me that it better not mean Leave With Out Paying - that said with a big smile.
I had requested six months of LWOP from the Postal Service and the boss asked me why. I told her "So I could go for a walk". They wouldn't let me have six months off without pay but did agree to ten weeks. It wasn't enough time to do a thru-hike but it was better than no hike. I hiked almost half of the AT before my time ran out and I had to return to work. Now, I am retired and will take all the time I want. I intend to make this hike last - zero will be a common number and I will smell a lot of flowers and take a lot of blue trails. I do intend to pass every white blaze - including the 1004 miles worth that I have already passed.
Anyway, that is a long answer to your short question. Sorry 'bout that. I guess I'm a bit excited.
  Lwop :))))))))))))))))))))'s
