Didn't the Legislative Branch work part time? I believe that they still do
though they would say that fund raising is part of their job. When you give
people the opportunity to raise their own salaries it is inevitable that they
will. If getting elected is made more possible by passing Bills that provide
employment through building roads, buildings, etc., then that will take more
money. If it is popular to fund the Arts and that will help you to get
re-elected then that will take more money. Boondoggle after boondoggle -- it all takes
money. It is a myth that your congressperson represents you. They are out
for themselves. It has become an occupation (Legislator) whereas at one time
it was a service and the income of the Legislator was earned in other pursuits.
Of course, from the beginning there was probably graft, bribery, insider
knowledge and other ways of gaining wealth by Legislators.
So Inflation happens and it takes more people to pay taxes so it can
continue.
Now, if everyone (and it would take Everyone to make it successful) refused
to pay any taxes that could be avoided or withheld then perhaps some impact
could be made.
Imagine if everyone got out on a Trail and hiked instead of paying their
Taxes. Why, the results would be mind boggling.
But it is not likely to happen. The Democrats think that the peoples money
should be confiscated (via Taxes) and the Republicans who say they want to give
the people their money with refunds just keep on spending (deficit spending)
which will drive Interest Rates up eventually.
So what is the ultimate solution? HIKE! Oh, and be sure to invest in Bonds
when the rates hit their high.
