[at-l] BIA grants recognition to Schaghticoke tribe.

On July 2, 2000 I was in CT heading NOBO on my thru-hike. The issue over the BIA (at that time) failing to recognize the Schaghticoke Indians as a tribal entity was simmering over. The Tribe was threatening to deny access to the portion off the AT that crosses their land just south of Kent, CT. The AMC had notified AMC's Ridgerunners to make hikers aware that a 10 mile (approximate) road walk might be necessary if, in fact, the Schaghticoke Indians followed through on their threats to block the land.

The threats elicited wide-spread press coverage, including an article in the NY Times. I still have a copy of that article in my yet-to-be assembled scrap book. Thankfully, the Indians decided NOT to block the trail, and I passed through the area uneventfully, altough, not before I nearly single-handedly cleaned out the bakery in Kent, CT.

Speaking of Kent, CT, I had a really nice time there. It was fun to sit around, read the Sunday NY Times, eat copious amounts of food, and just be plain old hiker trash amongst the millionaires with their Range Rovers, Maseratis, and Porsches.

Leslie,

Reference your post, dated 1-30-04, ?Steve, the point I'm trying to make
here is that, if they build a casino on this land, we'll have to move the
trail to get away from it. It wouldn't be conducive to a good hiking
experience for us to be walking around a casino, circling a parking lot,
trying to cross a busy thoroughfare that gives access to the casino, etc.
It's the considerations that we as a trail community will have to make that
concern me.?

I believe I understood your point. My point is, our concern may be moot.
We may be forced off the property - - the AT may be a continuing trespass -
- regardless of what they decide to do with it. .

Steve
