[at-l] Thru-hiking Handbook

The new edition of the Appalachian Trail Guide to Maine is being printed as we
write -- or at least that was the schedule Ray Nonan, editor, announced in
November.

The 4.5" by 6.5" book has trip-planning tips, road access information, safety
information and a great deal of historical information. The accompanying seven
maps show elevation changes, the trail route, road crossings, campsites,
shelters, intersecting trails and a detailed route description.

The new edition is costing MATC $65,000. But the sales are a critical part of
the club's $150,000 annual budget, contributing about $25,000 a year. The guide
was edited, written and designed wholly by volunteers. And volunteers will be
getting together early in January to fold and stuff the maps. Let's see: seven
maps, times 10,000 guides, times 7 folds per map, figures out to 490,000 folds.

I think it will be a long day.
