[at-l] Thru-hiking Handbook

The 2004 edition of The Thru-hiker's Handbook is now being printed. You can
order a copy in advance by going to the website

Though like most guides to a trail that changes with the whims of maintainers
it contains errors, I continue to think that THE THRU-HIKER'S HANDBOOK is the
best publication available for doing extended hikes on the Appalachian Trail. It
contains detailed information about shelters, campsites, water sources, and
other important Trail facilities along the 2,174.1-mile footpath, as well as
information about places in nearby towns used by thru-hikers for rest and
resupply ... information on hundreds of preferred hostels, campgrounds, motels,
restaurants, grocery stores, laundromats, outfitters, and other services.

The information is in a format useful for field use. Maps of towns most
frequently used by long-distance hikers are included, along with mileage data
for the entire A.T. from Georgia to Maine or vice versa.

I also like the Companion, but this is the book I choose most often to use when
planning a long distance hike, or when I just want to check information while
 sitting at home reminiscing.
