Volunteer groups maintain Appalachian Trail
Tuesday, August 12, 2003

For The Patriot-News
Stretching 2,172.6 miles from Maine to Georgia, including 229.4 miles in
Pennsylvania, the Appalachian Trail is one of those national symbols
that most of us take for granted.
We know that it exists. Maybe we know a little bit about it. And, we
know that it will be there when we're ready to use it.
However, only through the constant efforts of 33 clubs of volunteers,
with responsibilities ranging from 10 to 280 miles of trail, does the
revered AT exist as anything other than a weed- and bramble-choked
concept, blocked by fallen trees and limbs.

The Patriot News is also doing a 20 week series on PA trails which can
