This page is from NOAA.  Anyone interested in Personal Emer. Locator Beacons
and why they are being widely used might be interested in this page.  Note
that is was released 7/1/03.  Also, if you go looking, some places call
locator beacons by slightly different names -- apparently depending on who
uses them and what they are used for.  The best search phrase would probably
be "locator beacon".  but I doubt most of us would want to carry a large
beacon meant for a large tanker ship or airliner.
