[at-l] Hiking in Florida (and other hot places)

Bryan -
We live near Washington, DC. We get the same humidity - and sometimes
higher - that you do. And the 90+ temps. We spent 3 days in PA over July 4
weekend - it was hotter and more humid than in Florida. And had more
climbs.
Uh - hey, grey owl - or anyone else who was there - what was the temp in da
Nam when you were there? How much of an excuse was that? Now that was NOT
a fun hike, but it makes Florida seem almost frigid. <VBG>
We hike in summer. No excuses. <G>
But YMMV - we all make our own choices, don't we?
Walk softly - and wetly,
Jim

>LOL, let me assure you, 95 degrees in Florida ( and other places like
>Louisiana) is not the same as 95 degrees in Arizona. We take a annual trip,
>usually about 3 weeks, and often out to the southwest. We notice that when
>it is in the mid 90's out there in desert country it feels like the low
>80's
>back in Florida. We are surprised when we see the temperature displays on
>banks and such because it never feels that hot.
>
> The factor you are not adding to the calculation is that humidity in
>Florida runs a minimum of 80% and is often up to 100%. In the desert you
>sweat and cool off, sweating is not effective in Florida's a cooling
>mechanism. The humidity in desert country is more like 10 or 20%, that's a
>big difference. Of course that carries it's own hazards. Of course I have
>to
>say that it did feel rather warm a week or so ago when we were out there in
>Walnut Canyon, but I think it was around 112 or so at the time and Death
>Valley at Badwater was quite toasty at 122 a couple of weeks before that.
>But it was 106 here with 95% humidity a few years ago and that was darn
>hot.
