[at-l] Intro to a Fool

Hello All.

I'm very sorry to appear a lurker and suppose I should introduce my self. While researching The Trail recently I came across reference to this list and joined hoping to get some clues about the AT and hiking in general.
My name is Dave Wilson and I'm 42 years old. Two years ago while vacationing in Maine I decided to climb Katahdin. I went up the Abol and came down the Hunt Trail. For a guy from Florida - it was quite an accomplishment!
The first time I heard about the AT was many years ago. There was an old woman who wore a pack and walked up and down the roads in my town on the east coast of Florida. When asked why she did this, she replied she was practicing for the Appalachian Trail. I don't know if she ever made it to the trail or if she was just a "bag lady". The next time someone mentioned the trail to me was when a good friend of mine took it into his head that he'd like to hike it. Alas! He decided his knees were too far gone and let the idea die. Most recently an acquaintance of mine actually through-hiked most of the trail. Plato finished in '99 what he'd started in '98 (just short of a 2000 miler). Some of you may know him.
This brings me to the present and I'm off to Maine again in a few days for another well earned vacation. For the last month or so I've been furiously researching, planning and putting together what I hope to be a trail-worthy pack. I hope to hike a couple select sections of the Trail to get an idea of whether or not I enjoy long distance hiking and if I may want to plan a through-hike. I've enjoyed the repartee of the group here and have actually picked up a few choice morsels of info. I hope you will accept me into the group and allow me to keep learning all I can about the Trail and you all (that's yall around heayah!)

With highest regards,

Dave Wilson,
hyzertosser
