Hi PapaBear
The side trip to Elephant is a heck of a side trip, let us know if you spot
any old blazes! Safford Notch campsite is passed over by many ATers, I think,
and that's too bad. The huge glaicial erratic boulders and cool (pun) caves
are fun to poke around. Safford Brook trail is the old AT, blazed in the
thirties, and the Arnold Trail that runs through here which is a wee bit older. Check
out Arnold's Point for a breezy break from the bugs. You might be joined by
moose out there too, watch your step! The trail from Pierce Pond lean-to
(be-U-ti-ful site, I wanna live there) to the Kennebec has lots of short side trails
to waterfalls on one side and beaver works on the other. There's a side trail
off the AT after Moxie Bald that goes to the north peak, where there's
blueberries, poison ivy, and a stealth tent site for the bold :O)
For a side trail of imagination, read Arundel by Kenneth Roberts for a
rousing tale about Arnold's trek through Maine before you go.
Have a blast, PB!
