 Farmington Maine, home of a branch of the University of Maine. Some college
rating groups have placed UMF's quality of education ahead of Maine's ivy league
colleges. The AT and the Bigelow Preserve is 25-30 miles to the west, about
midway through the trail in Maine, the prettiest, wildest -- and least protected
-- 280 miles on the entire 2,170-mile pathway.
