The approach trail is a pleasant day hike. If you go up and do it Saturday
morning you can join Pittsburgh and crew on top of springer mtn for the
night an join the slow hike on Sunday.

If your going to do the approach trail because some people insist its part
of the "tradition" of the AT or other some such malarkey, than please..
start at the VISITORS CENTER. Do the whole approach trail if its because of
some tradition. That first mile isn't so bad with or without a pack. Theres
a lot worse ahead of you on the trail...

If its just because you want to do some extra hiking in the beginning, than
consider driving to springer and doing some day hiking, down to the hike
inn, or out the Benton Mackaye.. lots of good hiking in the area.
