Pemmican

My grandmother used elk and bear suet.

Suet becomes rancid during hot weather.

Today all kinds of things are sold as Pemmican -- most high energy rations.

Traditional Pemmican was dried fruit, or dried meat pounded into a powder,
or a combination, sealed in fat.

Fat was used to seal and keep the water out of dried fruit and/or meat. A
bit of rancid fat was digestible. Dried fruit, which got wet would spoil
and could kill you. For fat or dried meat you had to know how to tell safe
from deadly mold. I can remember my Grands telling us, "That meat is OK,
just scrape that ... [one color]... mold off. Or OTOH "That meat will kill
you, see that ... [another color]... mold. (I'll not repeat colors here for
liability reasons.)
