[at-l] Smokies section hike

Sly -

Actually I selected that time period to be with the thru-hikers - can't
join them for the whole journey but at least can live a little
vicariously through them for a short period. I am concerned about the
crowding and am hoping to not be putting anyone doing a thru out.

I have been doing sections the last couple of years during Spring and
have met many of those that were thru-hiking, and have really enjoyed
myself. Keep telling myself "one of these days....".

Brings up a question though. If the shelter is full and I do have the
shelter on my permit, can I tent at the shelter? Or is that only for
thru-hikers?

Thanks.

Jim,

Not for nothing, but I think I already touched on this. April is prime
thru-hiker season through the Smokies. The Smokies are great, but why
would you want to travel through when there'll be tons of thru-hikers,
all fighting for a spot due to the quota system?

Of course, if you apply for your permit and it's accepted you have
nothing to worry about. But, if I were to hike the Smokies
independently from a thru-hike it would be before or after April when
it's not so crowded.

YMMV.
