I agree.  I feel safer on the trail than I do at my local grocery store.
More alone, and, a bit farther from help if I need it.  But, safer.

I suspect that
 if one wants to minimize ones chances of being accosted by folks with
criminal
 intent, one should hike the Appalachian Trail.
