Another indication are the detailed records kept by the Ferry Man, employed
by the ATC, at the Kennebec River.  Steve L. used to post his numbers on
line, and they were broken down by status-- thru-hiker, day hiker, section
hiker, SOBO, NOBO, observed walkers etc.

I think one could make an argument that his numbers may give a better
indication of the number of thru hikers, albeit not a completely accurate
one.
