Around here it appears that one of the main qualifications is to look like =
one of the catalog or outdoor magazine models. Some of them even have outdo=
or backgrounds, a college degree in recreation. We had a family of them inv=
olved with our scout troop. Mom and daughter worked at LL Bean, sonny was a=
white water guide. They looked great when they hit the trail, in there LL =
Bean's finest. They loved sharing there outdoor wisdom, you can't go unless=
you have wicking synthetics, cotton kills (course kids can't afford that s=
tuff, so they didn't go because cotton kills). Those that could go, explore=
d the wilderness of many a state park trail. Then along came myself and ano=
ther father. We were bad examples, we wore cotton and wool, and backpacked =
in places where there was no running water and the toilet was a hole in the=
ground. They were upset when we started taking the kids backpacking on the=
AT without a guide, but when we started talking about the Allagash they ha=
d a fit, it couldn't be done safely without a guide. Darn I was glad to lea=
ve that troop.
Well, I got the retail experience now, along with a few thousand more mil=
es, maybe I'll try to find a job at the local outfitters. Can you make ANY=
money doing that? I don't need much...
Maybe it's my appearance!
