EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
THE NORTHERN FOREST ALLIANCE

The Northern Forest Alliance is a coalition of 43 conservation,
recreation and forestry organizations united in their commitment to
protect the Northern Forests of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New
York.  The Alliance's vision is to achieve a sustainable future for the
26-million-acre Northern Forest, in which its Wildlands are permanently
protected, its forests are sustainably managed, and its local economies
and communities are strong and vibrant.  The success of the Alliance's
work since its founding in 1991 has been the collaboration and
collective work of its many member organizations.  The executive
director is responsible for providing strong leadership for the Alliance
and working collaboratively with members and partners to achieve
results. The director will report to the Alliance's chair and executive
committee.


RESPONSIBILITIES

=B7      Manage all aspects of the Alliance's work, including planning,
policy development, budgeting, production of publications, fundraising,
grant administration and oversight of all staff and consultants (6 - 8
people).

=B7      Provide leadership and communicate the Alliance's vision to
decision makers, the media, funders and the general public.

=B7      Oversee the formulation, development, implementation, and
evaluation of the Alliance's programs and campaigns.

=B7      Lead the development and articulation of a national campaign to
secure funding for land protection.

=B7      Raise and administer funds to meet the Alliance's budget.

=B7      Develop, manage and nurture strong on-going relationships with
foundations and funders.

=B7      Cultivate and develop constructive and effective relationships
with Alliance members, partners, and government officials and agencies.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

=B7      Bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of relevant experience,
including work at a senior level; or graduate degree in non-profit
administration, environmental policy, science, law or natural resource
management and at least 5 years of relevant experience, including
senior-level work.

=B7      Extensive management experience including ability to motivate,
lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a large
multi-disciplinary team.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity
and professional growth.

=B7      Familiarity with conservation and economic issues and
opportunities in the Northern Forest.

=B7      Knowledge of current and evolving trends in conservation,
government relations, fundraising and non-profit management.

=B7      Experience in a national campaign.

=B7      Experience in fundraising, public relations, media and
communications, and personnel management.

=B7      Superb communication and presentation skills.

=B7      Experience managing group processes during discussions and
decision making.

=B7      Willingness to travel extensively throughout the region and to
Washington, D.C.

Office is currently located in Montpelier, Vermont; some flexibility
exists to relocate the office to other places within the Northern Forest.
