[at-l] Dogs in Maine

1. Some dogs have a problem in Mahossuc Notch, but then so do some people.
Most folks, and most dogs, seem to do just fine. Tiny little dogs might
have to be lifted up and "set" in place at certain points, just as this has
to be done in the White Mountains now and again. Medium size dogs seem to
do best. A few quick coments:
*Remove your dog's pack here and carry it yourself; there are too many
opportunities for it to get caught, snagged, or lost down a crevassse, etc.
*Make sure your dog stays close to you, and doesn't interfere with the
progress and safety of other hikers
*Make sure your dog's closeness doesn't interfere with YOUR safety
*As always, make sure the dog has identification tags in case it gets
separated from its owner
*Unless your dog is EXTREMELY well trained, you might want to take him
off the leash here, as you'll have enough on your mind without worrying
about the possibility of getting tripped up on the leash or yanked from side
to side

2. Dogs (well behaved and well-trained) have always been permitted on the
Kennebec canoe ferry, and I'm sure they will be next year as well.
Obviously, if you're hiking with a Great Dane or an irish Wolfhound or
something, you may have a problem; otherwise, you'll be fine. Be aware, of
course, that in crossing the river on the canoe, you do so ENTIRELY at your
own risk; i.e., if the dog freaks and jumps into the river never to be seen
again, this is not the ferryman's fault.
