The book is "Long Distance Hiking" by Roland Mueser.  Infection rates were
Iodine 26%, Filtering 30%, Boiling 34%, Cholring 75%, No Treatment 27%,
Average 30%.  Giardia infection rates were Iodine 6%, Filtering 9%, Boiling
3%, Chlorine 0%, No Treatment 3%, Average 6%.  He hints that you might run a
greater risk of catching illness from sharing food with another hiker (4% of
the population are silent carriers of Giardia) rather than from a water
source.
