I'm still totally puzzled about why the money was paid. Jim says it had
nothing
to do with the Thru Hikers Guide or the Companion. Does anyone have any
idea? We
have spent an awful lot of time on this thread and still lack the
essential
facts.

What does it matter anyhow.  Evidently a court ordered the payment or
the two parties agreed on a settlement which was acceptable to the
court.  Other folks have sued the ATC and gotten a lot more than Dan
Bruce.  Why don't you check on that.
