this thread has been making me laugh..  when I took my nephew to europe w/
me last summer, we stopped in Bayeaux to look at the Tapestry.  Done about
the battle of hastings, wm the conqueror stuff; normans invading england and
winning, 1066 a major year w/ major implications...  he had never heard of
it and he's graduating HS this year.  He'd never heard of wm the conq; 1066
meant nothing etc.  I was dumbfounded.  1492 and 1066 are the main 2 dates
i've ever been able to remember from my schooling!   he said he learned more
history on that trip just randomly than he had ever learned in school.
