They want you to get permits for each shelter where you plan to stay.
You can do this by phone and checking in at the ranger stations on
either side of 441 (Cherokee or Gatlingburg). Usually, this is not too
be a deal until the next major push of weekend warriors as the leaves
begin to change. They don't usually give short-term hikers permission
for ice-water shelter as it is too close to NFG, and would send you
along the way toward Kephard or another shelter off the ridge. Peck's
Corner isn't too far from NFG to reach around nightfall if you had a
noon start.
