I continue to be amazed by those of us who ridicule people who live in this
country and learn English as a second language.  These people already have
another language.

Many years ago I was startled, reading the Paris Edition of "The New York
Times," how many people spoke four or more languages.  Many multi-lingual
people held advanced degrees yet were seeking fairly low-level employment.

Few of us, born in the USA, learn any other language.

Your anecdote reminds me of a joke told after many Polish Jokes had already
been trotted out.  "What is black and blue, crawls, and has a loud cry?"

The questioner advised, "The next person who tells a Polish Joke."  His
ancestry was Polish.  Polish Jokes were temporarily suspended.
