It doesn't. Bug protection comes from clothing & sleeping bag. Some folks add netting and
chemicals to that formula.

Site selection and tarp hanging keeps you dry. If a ground depression is smaller than the tarp and
the tarp properly placed over it, you can sleep dry and warm in the depression during a rainstorm.
It's counter-intuitive to people who've used nothing but tents for sleeping on the ground. I
started using tarps before I started using hammocks and found the ground depression where the wind
leaves extra leaves to provide the best sleep, especially on cold nights (below freezing).
