[at-l] Southbound Start Date: 25JUN02

Eve - What a coincidence - I just came across this article.

RET in Sunny Fla

========================================================

Ailliam "Cody" Bateman will begin a six-month, 2,160-mile Appalachian
Trail hike on Friday, June 28, starting on Mt. Katahdin in Maine and
finishing at Springer Mountain in Georgia.

Bateman is using his trek to help draw attention to the crisis of
abandoned and abused children. He said that he wanted to use the
challenges inherent in the hike to parallel the obstacles of the
abused kids.

"My reason is simple," Bateman said. I come from an abused background
and I wanted to show people that I am doing something out of the
ordinary so I can help bring awareness to this cause."

His equipment will consist of a backpack weighing about 22 pounds
containing dried food, water, filtration equipment, tent, sleeping bag
and tri-nylon clothes designed to encourage "wicking" or temperature
regulation.
