I don't believe anyone has posted this info for the group, so here it is.
AMC Outdoors, May 2002, p. 46, announces that tenting fees this
summer will be $8, a rise from $6 at 9 of the 14 tentsites that the
AMC maintains (these are the 9 with caretakers). They cite rising
costs (of course) and claim that "We still haven't asked campers to
fully pay the cost of a stay". The shelter supervisor Kevin Metheny
says that AMC kicks in an additional $5 per person, per night.
The same issue also has a "Capital Campaign" ad to generate
donations. In the list it looks like the new Crawford Notch Highland
Center is budgeted at $6.5 M. This new facility is meant to replace
what was known as the Crawford Hostel. I don't know anything about
the decommissioning of the Hostel or the timeline for the new
facility. Anyone?
Third item I guess. This list, in past years, did a good job of
generating a list of "stealth campsites" in the Whites. I thought
this was a useful list for thruhikers since many of them feel trapped
by the AMC's hold on facilities along the AT. Has anyone got a copy
of the list? I believe it was constructed traveling S to N, starting
at Glencliff, NH just before the climb on Moosilauke and continuing
over to Old Speck in Maine.
