Sheesh. Is it all up and down the AT, or are there trouble spots? >>

The majority of the AT has minimal bear issues for hikers, and most people
end up hanging their food in the shelters or sleep with food in their tents
(whether people agree or disagree with those practices, that's what most
long distance AT hikers are doing). The trouble spots for bears are in
portions of GA between Springer Mtn and Dicks Creek Gap, the Smokies between
Fontana and Davenport Gap (though less common on the Davenport side because
hunters will linger along the road on the park boundary and shoot the bears
that wander out of the park there), Rockfish Gap to Tom Floyd Shelter (all
of Shenandoah Park), portions of eastern PA (more likely to be issues as you
get closer to DWG), all of NJ, isolated portions of NY west of the Hudson,
and isolated portions of the Whites in NH. On virtually every mile of the AT
it is possible to see a bear, but for the most part, only the above areas
have seen persistent problems of then going after hiker food. I'd be
interested in hearing about any additional trouble spots that i neglected to
mention.
