The strip map that you are referring to can be ordered on line from The Appalachian Trail Conference web site. For members it's only $1.50 or use to be anyway. Jon, I did the same thing you did in December 2000. Quit my job, sold my house and put everything in storage to hike the trail in 2001. I would do all over again for the experiences that I had on the trail...PRICELESS! Hope to see you both at Trail Days!
