Doing a little more research, it was more the size of
and a shape of an island in the bay area (What is now
called Block Island, which *DOES* have many tacky
t-shirt/ knick knack shops, but is way cool once you
get past the harbor areas..) that reminded him of the
Island of Rhodes.    

Roger Williams, the illustrious founder of State of
Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (the full
name, I kid  you not..smallest state with the biggest
official name!) thought he meant Aquidenck Island
(Newport) as looking like the Island of Rhodes. 
Somehow that island became the name for the whole
state.

Ok, that was the American Colonial history lesson for
today. Next week we discuss the impact of Rosseau on
the founding fathers... Should be just as exciting at
this e-mail thread. :-)
