pittsburgh 800pm 03/22/02

gary roberts picked me up at 800am at the motel in harrisonburg. we drove to winchester and retrieved my van. we then drove in seperate vehicles to brookside restaurant (luray) for lunch, meeting dr. dick. we then drove into shenandoah national park and positioned vehicles at little stony man and panarama restaurant (thornton gap). the three of us then hiked that section northbound. this is the section i missed the other day due to not having proper clothing...

it was cold and breezy. the air was crisp. the sun was bright and warming. the views into the valleys were the clearest i'd seen yet. we stopped to regroup at pinnacles picnic area, and then at birds nest #3 day use shelter. the ups and downs were all gentle, contrary to what the profiles seem to indicate. all in all, a great hiking day. gary was whipped<g>...

we will be day hiking for two more days, staying at the motel 6 in harrisonburg at night. this is because of the expected very low overnight temps during this period. we hope for a two day backpack monday and tuesday. gary then heads back to work...
