[at-l] April start date

"...I won't get on the trail until April 15 - 20. ... will (I) really have to
bust my butt to make up the mileage?

Early to mid April is the traditional starting date. Only in recent years have
the majority pushed the starting date back into March and sometimes
 February.

Starting April 15, you still have six months to make it to the summit of
Katahdin. If time gets to be a crunch, think about jumping ahead in Gorham, New
Hampshire or Grafton Notch to climb Katahdin and then do Maine southbound.

But if you travel at a reasonable speed, and have no time out for injuries, you
shouldn't have a problem. I started on April 13, and lost a week in Georgia and
another 10 days in southern New England with an infected toe and a
mal-functioning sciatica nerve. I had to by pass southern New England in order
to climb Katahdin on October 16. Otherwise my six months and three days would
 have been plenty.
