Re[2]: [at-l] Trail Maintenance: Blazing
Bob,
That was my beef with the section in Maine with the multitude of blazes.
There was no way to make a wrong turn. The forest was thick on either side
of the trail and there were no side trails. I know a few clubs in the south
are making an effort to standardize the blazes according to the
reccomendations of the ATC and doing an awesome job painting crisp clear
blazes, that look like they will last a long time..
I agree with a blaze every quarter mile on "straight and narrow" trail where
it's virtually impossible to get lost, others, closer together near roads and
double blazes at points of interest or a warning of a turn. I like the
slightly offset top blaze which tells you which way to look.
I do see a blaze on either side of a tree or rock a huge waste in resources,
when they should be alternated about one eight of a mile apart, a quarter
mile in any one direction. If in doubt, it's always wise to look back for
the south or northbound blaze.
