[at-l] re: tract homes

Actually I have not read any Carl Hiaasen, however, once I hit the send
button here I will head over to Amazon. And Kelly, Marjory Douglas is one
of my favorite people. She was (is) one of our state's finest ladies, and
her work went far in the battle to preserve what is left of the 'glades.
Now if we can only get big sugar to be responsible the area may have a
fighting chance.

I have spent the last several years working with the Boy Scouts and have
been preaching the LNT, something that is reinforced by the training that
they receive - or at least should receive. Hopefully some of what we are
doing with the new generation of young folks (dang, but I sound old...) will
work it's way back to into preserving our state.

I was born not far from where I currently live, and after a protracted stint
in the Navy came back. Over the last 25 years I have seen much destruction
of our state, most done in the name of progress, much done out of
indifference, a lot out of ignorance. Where I use to canoe down serene
winding rivers with cypress laden banks, I can now trudge in the mud,
pulling my canoe, most of the time filling it with the crap that people have
tossed by the wayside. In one trip alone I came across two dead alligators,
both shot in the head and the tail butchered off. Cry? Yeah, I did. Same
as when I had to put a young Osprey to death because of some idiot's use of
a shotgun. Such a god awful waste.

I finished Nimblewood Nomad's book awhile back, and while I loved his
writing, his description of how the trails here in Florida had been
pulverized by ATVs and jeeps made me cringe. Another waste.

Sorry to have gone off like this, I just haven't been up to the AT in almost
a year, and am due to get an infusion of the Trail. Going to do the section
from Dicks Creek to Fontana in early April.

Take care ya'll,

WhoAh
