NABS is short for any packaged crackers. But it originated with the NABISCO
BISCUIT COMPANY's products. Today LANCE and TOM's probably overshadow
"true" NABS. And Lance has a wide variety of flavors. I intend to take a
bunch on my next thru' hike (whether soon or when I retire).
It was common for field workers and factory workers to have a "linthead"
lunch (and some less savory terms) for a dime. And that lunch consisted of
NABS and Coke or a Moon Pie (not a Scooter Pie) and Coke. Over time NABS
came to be associated with any company's product and COKE came to mean to
many something other than Coca-Cola. RC for a long time was on top. You
still hear it in a lot of country places. Of course Moon Pies were bigger
back then and you could gather empties and trade them in for enough gas to
ride all weekend.
