I once did a rough computation of the number of miles of AT that are on
roads just due to road crossings figuring something like 20 ft per crossing
on average. I don't remember the answer but I think it was something like 10
miles but that may have included the unavoidable big bridges like over the
Hudson, Delaware, Susquahana, etc.
